BUILDING PERFORMANCE INSTITUTE
“CERTIFIED BUILDING ANALYST PROFESSIONAL”

BPI believes there is a need for a highly trained, skilled and professionalized residential energy efficiency retrofit and weatherization workforce.

building analystWe are a leading developer of technical standards for home performance and weatherization retrofit work that are recognized across North America. From these standards, we’ve developed training programs, professional credentialing for individuals and company accreditations – including quality assurance programs – that help raise the bar in home performance contracting.

As an independent, not-for-profit organization, we help to create sustainable, green-collar jobs in local communities – jobs that cannot be exported – while helping to improve the comfort, health, safety, durability and energy efficiency of America’s existing houses.

BPI certified professionals are highly skilled experts on the front-lines of the home performance industry.

building analyst classroomOur nationally recognized credentialing program identifies individual excellence in house-as-a-system evaluation, diagnostics and installation. Stringent technical standards and requirements mean that BPI certified professionals are in demand – from homeowners, state and utility energy efficiency incentive programs and weatherization assistance programs.

The rewards are great. Not only do certified professionals enjoy increased employment opportunities, they also play an integral role in reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil and improving the comfort, safety, durability and energy efficiency of existing housing.

Houses are the greatest asset most families will ever own. Investing in retrofit work to improve comfort, health, safety, durability and energy efficiency is a major step – one that must be successful.

That’s why we established nationwide quality assurance protocols and procedures for home performance contracting companies. As an independent, third-party organization, BPI has developed rigorous requirements that all of its accredited contracting companies must comply with in order to retain their status. We take it seriously. Unresolved non-compliance can result in delisting.

Our quality assurance program ensures that desired energy efficiency performance levels are achieved on each project and that the work performed protects and enhances the comfort, health and safety of the occupants.

This is not a ‘rubber-stamp’ scheme. BPI accredited contracting companies are required to document every test result and every correction installed. The documentation for each project is stored in the company’s database as part of their required internal control procedures and it’s also submitted to BPI.

Periodically throughout the year – and never less than once a year – we conduct an audit of each contracting company’s documentation. Any anomalies are flagged and brought to the attention of that company’s principal, who must explain or correct the issues to our satisfaction.

We also conduct random inspections of field work throughout the year and any time we receive a complaint. This allows us to monitor the quality of the work being performed and its compliance with our technical standards.

Each BPI accredited contracting company is required to establish internal quality control procedures. In the event of a dissatisfied homeowner, the contracting company’s own conflict resolution protocol is the first step. Most of the time, it involves simply fixing the problem at no extra cost.
